Where Cultural Heritage Takes Center Stage
The Xinjiang Cultural Opera House is envisioned as the cultural heart and defining architectural centerpiece of the Ürümqi Cultural Panorama, creating a new destination for performance, art, and cultural exchange in the region.
The building is conceived as a floating golden box, elevated above the landscape and wrapped in a finely perforated façade. The perforation draws from traditional Xinjiang cultural patterns, abstracted and reinterpreted through a contemporary architectural language. The resulting façade creates a luminous veil that changes character throughout the day, transforming into a glowing cultural lantern at night.
Inside, the opera house accommodates three principal theatres, complemented by a network of smaller pocket performance spaces. These intimate venues allow the building to support a wide range of experiences—from major theatrical and musical productions to experimental performances, cultural demonstrations, and spontaneous pop-up shows connected to the surrounding tourism district.
A New Home for Xinjiang’s Cultural Display
The interior architecture continues the dialogue with local heritage. Traditional architectural motifs, patterns, proportions, and material references are carefully reinterpreted throughout the public spaces and performance environments, creating a contemporary interior rooted in the cultural identity of Xinjiang.
Rather than functioning solely as a conventional opera house, the project is conceived as an open cultural platform—a place where visitors can encounter Xinjiang’s traditions through performance, architecture, art, and everyday public life.
